Our Values

Inclusivity

We believe in fostering a culture where everyone feels valued, heard, and respected – irrespective of who they are. We also believe in challenging what we consider to be “exclusive” practice in bioethics.

Individuality

We recognise that different people have different skills and talents, and we hope to create a space where these can be nurtured. We also recognise that the different aspects of a person’s identity do not fit neatly into categories (of race, sexuality, or anything else), and we want to celebrate what makes people unique.

Collaboration

We know that if we want to be effective, our work cannot be done in isolation. Therefore, we hope to work with like-minded organisations to create the positive change that is needed in the UK bioethics community.

Courage

We know that conversations on race and ethnicity can be challenging, but we are committed to raising these issues in mainstream bioethics. We also recognise that while this may be uncomfortable or unpleasant for us as individuals, we are working towards a shared goal of improving opportunities for all people of colour.

Equity

We do not believe in treating everyone exactly the same, as we understand that some people face adverse conditions and circumstances, which make life more challenging. We believe that everyone should be provided with what they need to succeed, even if this involves varying the resources and opportunities provided to different people, in order to reach an equal outcome.

Empathy

Although we may not have the same experiences as others, we will try our best to understand how others have been affected by bias and discrimination. We will put kindness and compassion for others’ experiences, at the centre of all our work.
